We talked in our last blog post HERE about not needing to be connected to our trauma. That Jesus has broken the chains and set us free… So, what should we think about if it’s not trauma, or being a trauma survivor? There are many scriptures that tell us to think on and remember the things of God. To bring to our remembrance the scriptures, the truths. 2 Peter 1:12 NASB “Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them and have been established in the truth which is present with you.” Psalm 78 talks of doing different than the Israelites did in the past, and remembering the glorious works of God. “We will not hide them [the works of God] from their children, but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might, and the wonders He has performed.” Psalm 78:4 BSB, I added inside brackets. And “I will remember the works of the LORD; yes, I will remember Your wonders of old. [12] I will reflect on all You have done and ponder Your mighty deeds.” Psalm 77:11-12 BSB.
We are to focus on and remember all that God has done, this is how our story can be used, to point out God's amazing grace, and help in times of need. Testimonies encourage others, point people to God, if they are focused on God, and not what the devil stole. We are told to not forget it. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and do not forget all His kind deeds— [3] He who forgives all your iniquities and heals all your diseases, [4] who redeems your life from the Pit and crowns you with loving devotion and compassion, [5] who satisfies you with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:2-5 BSB.

We also know that we are to focus on the good… “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things. [9] Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9 BSB. Trauma doesn’t fit here. Could we focus on God’s amazing grace in setting us free? Sure. That's a great thing to share, the hope in the story, the provision, etc. If you can share of your past as a testimony to Jesus, fantastic!
All the stories of people being healed in the New Testament by Jesus are just freedom, no past digging, not trauma processing. But I also wanted to look at a story of Paul and Silas in jail, when they had been placed in the inner jail (likely solitary confinement underground), with their hands and feet bound. Let’s look at what they did. “About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. [26] Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. At once all the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose.” Acts 16:25-26 BSB. The experience of being in the inner jail with hands and feet bound, would be called traumatizing today. We would be told today that there would be negative effects from that permanently by some, others would say permanently unless you processed it. However, Paul and Silas praise God, and are set free, and then set their jailor free. The jailor thought he would get in trouble when he realized they were free, but they helped him, shared the gospel with him, and got him and his whole family saved. That is definitely moving forward and not backward! It’s not unkindness to not look back and try to release the trauma, it’s knowing their freedom and walking forward in it. Let’s walk as victors, and more than conquerors.
Let’s move forward in life like Paul and Silas, and think on things that are the awesomeness of God, and walk in true freedom. We will continue this conversation more, I know there is more on it.
