Do I need to connect with my past and process trauma to be healed and set free? We are Free! Jesus broke the chains.

We are FREE!!!

I know how tempting it can be to think we have to process trauma, and all the emotions of old memories.  And if an emotion comes up in the present, we get to allow it to release, and express it in a safe way.  Emotions and feelings were created by God.  They are neither bad nor good. Our emotions and our feelings can lie, so we don’t let them rule us, or change the direction we were going to go, or our actions.  But we take care of ourselves when things come up.   You are to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39b BSB.  Since we are to love others as we love ourselves, we have to love ourselves, and first receive God’s love in order to do that.  Because “We love because He first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 BSB.

We are definitely told by the world that we have to process trauma to heal or be set free.  I teach somatics class, and many people believe that that is to release trauma.  I do believe it brings our body into the present, where we can actually release any emotions that come up when our body feels safe.  Bringing our body into the present allows it to feel safe, because it’s not thinking it is in some past trauma.  And the releases that we get, is the energy in our body as muscles relax, as nervous system states shift, etc.  It takes energy to stay in a freeze, fight or flight, or shut down state. It takes energy to keep muscle tension on, maintain hypersensitivity of nerves, etc.  So, we get to give our body permission to let go.   Can trauma be a cause of this stress, yes, absolutely. But at the root of all trauma, is the enemy.  The enemy is at the root of anything that comes to steal, kill, and/or destroy.  Whether the stealing is from your pocket book for treatments, or your energy, ability to function, time, relationships, etc. its all stealing, killing, and destroying.  When we become a new creation in Christ, that is paid for. Jesus came to destroy the works of the enemy, and He did. So as new creations, you are free.  “This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8b BSB.  And we know that Jesus is the word made flesh, and it says that the word will not return to the Father void “so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.” Isaiah 55:11 BSB.  Jesus returned to the Father, and He had accomplished that which He was sent to do. He destroyed the works of the enemy. The enemy is a defeated foe. The chains are broken. It’s a free gift, and we get to receive it.

The gospels tell of Jesus’ ministry on the earth.  We see that Jesus did not tell people to work on their past to get healed. He just set them free.  The disciples did the same. We are told: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”. Matthew 28:19-20 BSB.   Jesus had commanded them when they go into a town to “Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God is near you.’ Luke 10:9 BSB.  He tells them to heal the sick, and cast out demons, and feed the hungry, but Jesus doesn’t tell them to make sure everyone knows they actually have to process trauma.  He also doesn’t tell them that all the trauma they experienced disqualifies them or blocks them from receiving from Him.

Jesus did not have the demoniac (who we call Legion) from Mark chapter 5 go back and feel bad about the thousands of demons that tormented him, or whatever probably happened in his childhood.  He told him to go forward, and share his testimony, and preach the gospel.  So go forward, not back.  He said to the demoniac (legion) in Mark 5:19b NASB “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you”.  We are told to be strong, and remember God’s power in us.  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” Ephesians 6:10 BSB.  That goes with being a new creation. the old is gone, the new is here from 2 Cor 5:17.  So we get to know our identity of the present. Who we are now!  Even if we don’t feel it yet. We declare the end from the beginning.  I summarize the beginning verses leading into the armor of God description in Ephesians 6 as saying stand, stand, and stand therefore.   We are not standing solid, if we are flying back to the past.  We are here now, in this present.  We get to realize who we are, and who God is.

Jesus doesn’t ever tell someone to work through their past, or share the whole story with him.  He told Lots wife not to look back.  Unfortunately, she did look back, and was turned into a pillar of salt. Thankfully we are in a new covenant!   Jesus tells people to go forward and preach the gospel.  We are no different than the people Jesus ministered to.  Just looking at percentages, there were have been plenty of them with a history of trauma.  And with traumas link to sickness and problems, you could argue that maybe all of them had a history of trauma.  But even if it was somehow just 10%, we would have seen Jesus treat those trauma victims differently if it was required. And we don’t.  Jesus just set’s people free, and tells them to go forward in life. So, we get to receive that!  We are free!  We are new creations in Christ, and victorious and more than conquerors.

Of note, you are a new creation in Christ, and victorious in Christ Jesus, and more than a conqueror if you have given your life to God, and declared that Jesus is the Lord and Savior of your life.  It may sound crazy, that you can just be made new, and then sanctified from the inside out, and transformed by the renewal of your mind. But it’s true.  Know that I don’t get offended by questions or doubts, I want everyone to have the opportunity to be free.  So please ask me about Jesus if you want to know more!
